HISTORY AND HERITAGE
The Dziewanowski International Institute for Chopin operates under the patronage of his Lordship Marcin Dziewanowski and his family. The roots of the family reach back to the 10th century. Their ancestral estates include the famous Szafarnia Chateau, the estate that served as summer vacation and musical inspiration for Frédéric Chopin during his formative years. Frédéric's father, Mikołaj Chopin, was the personal tutor of the Dziewanowski children, including young Dominik who became Frédéric's lifelong friend. Chopin's nickname for Dominik was "Domus", the name of our institute -- because it encapsultes the idea of deep friendship. It was on the land of the Dziewanowski family that Chopin created his his professional composition, "Zydka" the Mazurka A minor op17 no 4. The family's unique relationship with young Chopin is reflected in their family coat-of-arms, serving as the Institute's logo.
